President Obama on nation building during remarks to the United Nation General Assembly:
Just as force alone cannot impose order internationally, I believe in my core that repression cannot forge the social cohesion for nations to succeed. The history of the last two decades proves that in today’s world, dictatorships are unstable. The strongmen of today become the spark of revolution tomorrow.
As much as one wishes that the above assertion were true, President Obama offers at best wishful thinking and at worst downright intellectually dishonesty. Indeed, the history of the last two decades has proven that dictatorships are unstable. But how can we ignore the reality of the alternative - chaos in Syria, Iraq and other countries where dictatorships have been toppled.
